Every year the Best Awards bring together the very best from our design community. This week the finalists were announced, with three of Fly’s projects getting the nod of approval. Fly was part of the joy from both sides - both as entrant and judge and it was a thrilling experience.

Entering Work

It’s been an invaluable process to raise the bar on how we create, present and communicate the intent and impact of our work. Our clients go on a journey with us over many months to create the end product and condensing that journey down to 10 images and 500 words means we have to keep it real. There’s no room for fluff, the judges can see through it anyway. The work is laid out to bare and that feels great. When we aren’t finalists, it provokes us to think how we will do things even better. When we get the nod of approval, we feel the joy of a pat and can express gratitude to our clients for allowing us to produce work that is respected by our industry.

Judging Ngā Aho Category

Our Creative Director, Johnson McKay was a judge on the Ngā Aho category which celebrates work that creates a rich, culturally authentic national identity. The work reveals a brave, modern and evolving nation, embracing a unique identity, formed out of this land and people. The work is created with deep collaboration between agency, client and the Māori community who bring a depth of insight into the unique mana and mauri of Aotearoa. Ngā mihi maiōha ki ngā kaiwhakawā: Karl Wixon, Mark Dalton and Waikare Komene. He rangatira koutou katoa. View the Ngā Aho finalists here.

Being a Finalist

Our work for Te Ohu Kaimoana, Lemon & Paeroa and Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development has been selected as finalists. These projects were hugely fulfilling to work on and testament that having a great client and brief can bring about amazing work. Thanks to Bede Dwyer and Dion Tuuta of Te Ohu Kaimoana, Laura Knight and Angela Broad of Coca Cola Amatil and Beth Leyland and Jes Sweetman of ATEED. Thanks for the support and opportunity.

To all the finalists - amazing work. We’re going to go through the whole website and consume all the beauty, inspiration and passion poured into the best work for 2019.
